Prison Guard Shoots Wife And Colleague Over Alleged Extra-marital Affair

Police in Buikwe District, Uganda are investigating the circumstances in which a prison guard shot and killed his wife and a colleague.
The incident happened on Monday afternoon at Bugungu Government Prison in Kanfunta, Nyenga Division, Njeru Town Council, Buikwe District.
Mr David Onyango, one of the leaders in the area, said the caretaker was having domestic issues with his wife with whom they have an eight-month-old baby, but they have yet to go public with the matter .
“This morning we heard gunshots coming from the prisons and after running there we found two dead bodies on the ground. The suspect who is a prison guard had a misunderstanding with his wife who was also a prison guard. jail,” he said.
Some locals who spoke to Uganda Monitor on condition of anonymity said the man suspected the wife of having an extramarital affair and that could have been the cause of the incident.
Ssezibwa Regional Police spokesperson Ms Hellen Butoto confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as Jacob Otim.
She identified the deceased as Eunice Abwot, 25, and Edward Namanya, 30, all prison guards attached to Bugungu prison in Buikwe district.
“The suspect has since been arrested and is being held at Njeru Police Station as the investigation continues. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital morgue for autopsy,” it said. she added.
Uganda Prison Service spokesman Frank Mayanja Baine also confirmed the incident in a statement.
He said the two prison guards were allegedly shot dead by Wader No 16734 Otim Jacob who then attempted to kill himself but was overpowered by other staff on duty and arrested.
According to the statement, suspect Otim signed for a gun early in the morning to perform general duties but headed to the sentry where he first shot Abwot and when his colleague Nahamya heard the bullets and s rushed to verify what had happened, he was also shot. down.
Baine said police were immediately called and took over crime scene management and exhibits were recovered from the scene.
He did not reveal the possible cause of this unfortunate and sad event and said further details would be released later.
